As in the previous two years, the Mobile World Congress, the industry's most important event and previously known as the 3GSM World Congress, will bring together the leading companies and international bodies involved in the development of telephone and mobile communications. Exhibitions and seminars on mobile TV services will be offered, while leading audiovisual and telecommunications companies will showcase their latest innovations and technological solutions in this market.
abertis telecom, as Official Mobile TV Provider at the World Congress for the third year running, is responsible for rolling out the network for all mobile television providers. This year abertis telecom has deployed nine networks to provide coverage in the DVB-H, DVB-SH, StiMi, T-DMB and MediaFLO standards. This year's congress will also see the rollout of a network based on the Chinese StiMi standard for the first time. This has been made possible through the cooperation agreement signed in November with the National Scientific Institute of China to develop mobile television projects in conjunction with abertis telecom.
The infrastructure deployed by abertis telecom includes its television transport and broadcasting facilities at the Collserola Tower, the capacity of the Hispasat and Eutelsat satellite systems and a number of transmitters installed in the Fira showground, which will complete the coverage for broadcasts inside its halls. The rollout by abertis telecom guarantees mobile TV coverage throughout the showground.
abertis telecom will be broadcasting over these programming networks for more than 40 radio and television channels from leading national and international broadcasters, as well as the GSM Media Partners, CNBC and the congress' own channel, the Mobile TV network, which will be broadcasting throughout the event.
abertis telecom actively promotes the development of mobile television, spearheading internationally renowned projects such as WingTV and FURIA. It has also carried out six pilot programmes throughout Spain with the country's leading radio broadcasters and mobile operators.
Abertis Telecom at the MWC 2008
In addition to its technical participation as network supplier, abertis telecom will also have a stand at this year's Mobile World Congress in the Spain Pavilion (Hall 3) and has installed a Technical Room - located in Pavilion 6 - which will house the high-tech equipment required for its exhibitions. In line with its previous association with the industry, abertis telecom has coordinated and collaborated on integrating the various conditional access systems as well as various interactive services for the mobile television platforms rolled out. Thanks to these efforts, visitors to the congress will be able to view the SCP, DRM and OSF conditional access systems, as well as various interactive applications such as Digitext, interactive portals, time reporting, chat, voting and advertising. In order to integrate the various interactive systems, abertis telecom has worked together with various technological suppliers such as Sofia Digital of Finland and Motorola of the US, as well as radiobroadcasters RTVE, A3 and TVC. All of these new services, standards and systems will be demonstrated by the equipment makers and suppliers themselves at the abertis telecom stand. abertis telecom will also work in conjunction with the various manufacturers to perform interoperability tests of all the equipment being showcased at the event in its Technical Room . Hispasat, Eutelsat, Athenas, Telelux, Tredess, Albalá and DMT have all worked together with abertis telecom in the rollout of resources.
The Furia Project and B21C
The Spain Pavilion will showcase content of the FURIA Project. This project, coordinated by abertis telecom, aims to analyse and evaluate emerging audiovisual broadcast technologies: broadcasting multimedia content for mobile handsets (DVB-H), broadcasting multimedia content to mobile handsets using hybrid terrestrial and satellite (DVB-HS) networks and the second generation of Digital Terrestrial Television (DVB-T2).
The FURIA Project is sponsored by the Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Trade via the PROFIT 2006 tender with the Avanza Plan in the section "Boosting Spanish Technological Platforms". This section falls under the auspices of e-NEM, whose Secretariat is performed by AETIC (the Spanish Technological, Information and Telecommunications Companies Association).
The following organisations are involved in this project along with abertis telecom: Hispasat, La Salle University, Sidsa, Mier, Egatel, Community, Robotiker, Fagor and Televés.
abertis Telecom also participates in the Celtic B21Cm project in Europe. With a budget of E22Mn, this project comprises a task force of 35 organisations from nine countries aimed at elaborating the technical propositions for the future of Digital Video Broadcasting. abertis telecom heads the experimental testing working group and coordinates the Spanish task force, which comprises Hispasat, Mier Comunicaciones, Robotiker, SIDSA, Telefónica I+D and the Ramon Llull University.
